1915-S $5 Indian Head Half Eagle PCGS MS62
Here's a key date listing that the specialist will want to study closely. PCGS has graded 204 as MS62 with 68 finer. There is none finer than MS64+ in PCGS.
Gold specialist David Akers writes, "This is one of the major rarities of the series, indeed of all 20th-century gold coins. It is not at all easy to find even in MS-60 and specimens in MS-63 or better are really few and far between." Following along the same lines, NGC Coin Explorer writes, "The 1915-S Indian half eagle has one of the lower mintages of the series at 164,000 coins. Unfortunately, there was a coin shortage in the country at the time, and most of these went directly into circulation. Therefore this coin is very hard to find in uncirculated condition."
Artist-engraver Bela Lyon Pratt, who designed the Indian head half eagle and quarter eagle.
