Jeff Garrett writes, "As would be expected from its massive mintage, the 1914–S is among the most common dates of the entire series. Large groups of the date continue to be found in shipments arriving from Europe to this day. Most seen are satiny and bold, although many are found with handling marks from years of storage or from jostling about in storage bags. Most survivors are in the MS 62 to MS 65 grade range."

Gold specialist David Akers writes, "The 1914-S is usually well struck and the surfaces of most specimens have a very fine granularity and a somewhat satiny texture. Lustre is nearly always very good to excellent. The color is rarely less than excellent and is often outstanding; most examples have a light to medium orange and greenish gold color. Top grade examples of this issue (and there are quite a few) can be exceptionally attractive."
