1914 $2.50 Indian Head Quarter Eagle NGC MS62
Here is a more desirable year in the popular Indian head quarter eagle series. With a mintage of 240,000, this one of the best dates in the series. NGC has graded 2,456 as MS62 with 1,518 finer. Collector’s Universe prices this issue at $2,400.00 in MS62.
David Akers writes, “The typical 1914 is very sharply struck with above average luster for the series.… The surfaces are nearly always very finely granular and the color is most often a light to medium greenish yellow gold. However, a number of examples also exist that a light rose or coppery color.”

Jeff Garrett writes, “As can be seen from the rather sharp drop in mintage, the 1914 is one of the scarcer coins for the series. It is considered the second-best date and is difficult to obtain in any level of Mint State.… As would be expected, the 1914 is very rare in Gem condition, with just one or two trading hands at auction each year.”
Important comment from Jeff Garrett:
About the very large certified population, Garrett writes, “The price of a 1914 Indian Head Quarter Eagle jumps rather sharply from one grade to the next and is a favorite of re–submitters. The population numbers should be viewed with some skepticism, as many of the tags have not been returned to update the population reports.”
