1913-S 25C Barber Quarter Dollar PCGS VF20 (CAC)
Mintage of only 40,000!
This offering from AUCM is ideal for the key date specialist. There are three such keys in the Barber quarter series, and the perfect circulated example is ready to add to your collection! This piece saw many years in circulation before a knowledgeable collector tucked it away for safe keeping. Look at the images. This is a clean, attractive VF example, with no distracting hits or abrasions. PCGS has graded 14 as VF20 with 120 finer. In CAC, there are 5 in VF20 with 25 finer.
A blue coin folder for Barber or Liberty Head quarters. Early collectors put circulated examples of the 1913-S and other quarters found in change in such folders.
This issue is the last of the Trifecta of Barber quarter rarities. Even though the 1913-S has the lowest mintage, it is more common than the über-key 1901-S. This is due to the 1913-S being a more recent issue and thus easier to collect when the coin collecting hobby became popular in the mid-1930s. That difference of a mere dozen years was sufficient to ensure a higher survival rate for the pieces such as the one offered by AUCM. A good number of this date was saved in grades stretching from AG to VG by collectors filling up early coin boards. However, examples in higher circulated grades are quite rare. NGC Coin Explorer writes, "Mint State coins are in limited supply, but their numbers suggest that at least one roll was saved for future collectors. Gems are available, and they command very hefty premiums. The low mintage of this issue was a by-product of an economic recession that hung over the nation during 1913-14 and lingered into the following year."
