1913-S $10 Indian Head Eagle PCGS MS63
The 1913-S is one of the leading rarities in the $10 Indian Head eagle series in all Mint State grades. Of the 66,000 pieces produced, evidently a considerable number of that mintage was put into circulation, for the majority of survivors grade no finer than VF-AU. Therefore, this radiant example represents a fleeting opportunity for the advanced gold collector.
Jeff Garrett writes, “This date is the second rarest Indian $10 after the 1911–D. The 1913–S is rare at any level of Mint State and difficult to locate. Prices for the issue rise sharply at every stage of the Mint State ladder. Unlike other San Francisco issues, the strike is usually at par or better. The Smithsonian collection contains a single AU example.” PCGS has graded 31 pieces as choice MS63 with 22 finer. Collectors Universe prices this issue at $25,000.00.
