Important Key Date to Series!

At the Denver Mint in 1911 only 55,680 quarter eagles were produced. Most were very well struck, however on a sizable amount the mintmark is weakly defined; these are not nearly as desirable as those with a strong D mintmark, such as the example offered here by AU Capital Management. PCGS has graded 806 as AU58 with 1,696 finer. Collector’s Universe gives this Strong D issue a price of $7,500.00 in AU58.

Writes David Hall, “Note that there is one variety of 1911-D $2.5 that has a very weak (barely visible to say the least) mint mark. Though rarer than "strong mint mark" variety, it sells for much less. Seems that when someone buys a 1911-D $2.5 they actually want to see the D!”

Writes Stack’s Bowers Auctions, “For whatever reason, not many 1911-D quarter eagles were saved at the time of issue and the coins disappeared into commerce. While the issue's low mintage has always been an indicator of its scarcity, the advent of the certification services and their population figures has allowed a clearer picture of survival rates and overall rarity. The 1911-D's position as by far the rarest of the series has withstood the test of time.”
