Collecting the 1909-S Lincoln Cent
Considered a "poor stepsister" to the 1909-S Indian Head cent and the 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent, the 1909-S, with its mintage of 1,825,000, is nonetheless a rare coin on its own. The 1909-S has the forth lowest total mintage in the Lincoln cent series after the 1909-S VDB, the 1931-S, and the 1914-D. I actually found one of them in change as a child and put it into my Library of Coins album at the time; I did not realize that it was a key date of the series until many years later. NGC writes, "...the 1909-S cent without initials is actually much more challenging to find across all Mint State grades. Though almost four times as many of this revised variety were coined, it was not until the 1930s that there was much interest in collecting Lincoln cents. Only then did the price for the 1909-S begin to advance."
