This offering is a specimen of dignified beauty. Out of its original mintage of 3,423,560, there have been 129 awarded the desirable grade of MS64+, with 149 finer (as of 5/2021). David Akers tells us, "The 1909-D is usually well struck (as are most Denver Mint gold coins) and they are seen both satiny (uncommon) and with a 'soft' frosty finish. The lustre for this issue is good to very good....Color is wide ranging from coppery gold to greenish gold to bright yellow." Plus the coveted green CAC sticker gives this stunner greater value and cachet. Only 14 coins are endorsed in a higher grade by CAC than the present MS64+.

It is with great pleasure that we at AUCM present a 1909-D $5 Indian head half eagle graded PCGS MS64+ (CAC). David Akers writes, "This issue is by far the most common of the series in Mint State....Locating a specimen in MS-63 or lower grade is no problem at all but in MS-64...this issue is much more difficult to find than most people realize." Therefore, this piece would be the perfect addition to a collection of better condition gold coinage.
Noted numismatic scholar and art critic Cornelius Vermeule writes, "Bela Lyon Pratt of Boston presented a novel coin.... an Indian brave in war bonnet adorns the obverse, and [a] Ptolemaic eagle with wings closed walks along on the reverse...The innovations [on this coin] was one of technique as much as design. Instead of being modeled in relief within a protecting rim, the Indian, the eagle, and the lettering were sunken in incuse or engraved in the uniformly flat plane of the coin .... the [coin shows] more imagination and daring of design than almost any other issue in American history."
