1908-S 1C Indian Head Cent PCGS MS65RB (CAC)
Here's the penultimate issue from the ever-popular San Francisco Mint of the Indian Head cent series. PCGS has graded 167 as MS65RB with only 33 finer (none above MS66). In CAC, there are 67 in MS65 RB with just 11 finer.
James B. Longacre's self portrait as a young boy. He is the artist who created the Indian head design for the cent.
This issue has the third lowest mintage of business strike Indian cents, the others being the 1877 and the 1909-S. The latter has the lowest mintage of the entire series (1859-1909). Due to its low mintage of 1,115,000, and the fact that it was the first San Francisco Mint cent ever, the 1908-S has always been an extremely popular coin. The bulk of uncirculated 1908-S cents have been graded MS64. However, just one point higher, in MS65, this issue becomes a rarity. In fact, in MS66 this issue is considered to be very rare.
