1908 $10 Indian Head Eagle NGC MS64 (CAC)
Here's an excellent gold type coin that is graced with one of our most striking numismatic designs: Augustus Saint-Gaudens' Indian Head. Just imagine adding this beauty to your collection. Please take a look at the images of this listing. There are two types for the 1908 issue: No Motto and Motto.
Jeff Garrett writes, “President Roosevelt thought it was immoral to have God’s name placed on our coinage. Congress disagreed and in the latter part of 1908 the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was restored to eagles and double eagles. Most examples seen are well struck with above average luster. Choice and Gem examples are scarce, but can be obtained with minimal effort.”
NGC has graded 235 examples of the Motto 1908 $10 Indian head Eagle as MS64, with 151 finer. Collectors Universe prices this issue at $4,500.00. In CAC, there are 60 in MS64/64+ with 27 finer. CAC gives this Motto issue a price of $4,750.00.
The imagery of the iconic American Indian feather headdress upon the $10 Gold Eagle was the brainchild of President Theodore Roosevelt. Pictured is Chief Sitting Bull wearing his eagle feather headdress in 1885. Photo: Wikimedia Commons.
