1908 $20 Saint Gaudens Double Eagle, No Motto PCGS MS63 (OGH)
A beautiful piece in the popular PCGS Old Green Holder!
Gold specialist David Akers writes of the 1908 No Motto, "Lustre is usually very good, better than the 1907, and the color is rarely less than excellent and is often great--an ultra rich greenish gold, sometimes with rose or orange highlights. The surfaces typically have a 'soft' frosty look, but many specimens have a satiny sheen that is rarely seen on a 1907."
PCGS has graded a massive 58,753 examples as MS63 with 101,281 finer. Collectors Universe prices this issue at $2,700.00 in MS63.
Numismatic scholar and art critic Cornelius Vermeule writes, "The double eagle is perhaps the most majestic coin ever to bear our national imprint." Jeff Garrett writes of this issue, “After some struggles in 1907 producing gold coins, the United States Mint got the ball rolling in 1908. The 1908 No Motto Double Eagle is one of the most common issues of the series. Large numbers were sent to European banks and a steady supply of the issue has been flowing back to the states for decades.”
