1907 $20 Saint Gaudens High Relief, Wire Rim PCGS MS62
Here is a stunning beauty to add to your collection, Saint-Gaudens’ masterpiece, the $20 High Relief Double Eagle. PCGS has graded 714 as MS62 with 1,510 finer. Collector’s Universe prices this issue at $24,000.00 in MS62.
The 1907 High Relief Double Eagle is considered by many to be the most attractive coin the United States ever issued for day-to-day circulation. Regrettably, it was not as practical as it was beautiful; the high relief of the devices of Liberty and the eagle made the coin impossible to stack properly and therefore unpopular and unsuitable for commercial purposes. Production was also impractical because it required five blows of the coin press to fully bring up the design, which made high speed, mass production impossible.
Jeff Garrett writes, "The 1907 High Relief Double Eagle is one of the most popular coins ever struck by the United States Mint. The coins are sculptural in appearance and are considered by many to be the most beautiful regular issue gold coin ever produced."
