This specimen is rich with history. Collectors of San Francisco numismatic art love the city's romantic connection with the Gold Rush and Old West. However, this piece also has a tragic historic connection: it was struck in 1906, the year of the Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire. The Mint, affectionately called the 'Granite Lady,' stood as one of only two buildings in its neighborhood that was not damaged by either the earthquake or the subsequent fire. Plus this issue represents the penultimate year of the popular Liberty head double eagle series. PCGS has graded 1,299 in MS63 with 385 finer.
The San Francisco Mint, aka the 'Granite Lady,' stands proud and undamaged after the 1906 Earthquake and Fire.
