1904-S $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle NGC MS61
The year 1904 saw the San Francisco Mint produce over five million double eagles. That significant mintage resulted in less time, gold, and manpower to strike the $5 half eagles of that year. Thus just 97,000 of the half eagles emanated from the San Francisco Mint, resulting in 1904 being one of the lowest mintages for that mint in this series. PCGS has graded 36 examples as MS61 with 62 finer.
The San Francisco Mint, nicknamed the 'Granite Lady,' where this piece was struck in 1904.
Here's an interesting aside for collectors: Did you know that the Liberty head half eagles were the only coin to be struck at every single U.S. mint? So, if you would like to put together a type set of Liberty head $5 half eagles, then a great project would be to acquire one of each minted in Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver! Imagine putting together that unique set of seven coins from seven different mints. Wouldn't that be a great numismatic accomplishment? And the perfect affordable San Francisco Mint example is within your reach, waiting for you to claim it as your own.
