1904 $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle NGC MS65
Here's the perfect, quintessential gold type coin! Take a close look at the images of this coin. It is absolutely stunning! From its mintage of 6,256,699, there have been an enormous 241,491 of the 1904 Liberty Head double eagles graded mint state by NGC. From among those, there have been 7,371 graded by NGC as MS65, with 379 finer.
David Akers writes, "The 1904 is by far the most common date in the Liberty Head Double Eagle series and it is also one of the commonest of all twenties along with the 1908 No Motto, 1924 and 1927. The 1904 is available in large quantities and a great many choice, gem and even superb examples exist." That is why it is not offered at an exorbitant price in the gem state MS65.
Here's one of the true wonders of American numismatics: the 1849 Double Eagle pattern crafted by James B. Longacre, US Mint Chief Engraver. It is housed in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
