1903-O $10 Liberty Head Eagle PCGS MS62 (CAC)
This is one of the best struck eagles from New Orleans. At times, the obverse is not fully defined on the curls around Liberty’s face, however most 1903-O eagles are sharply struck on the obverse and reverse. Since most specimens are well struck and lustrous, the 1903-O is an excellent choice as a type coin. PCGS has graded 606 as MS62 with 275 finer. Collectors Universe gives this issue a price of $2,450.00 in MS62. In CAC, there are 55 in MS62 with 47 finer. CAC prices this issue at $2,250.00 in MS62.
Doug Winter writes, “The luster is above average with most of the higher grade pieces showing a frosty texture. There are some that have a more subdued luster with a grainy texture.” This issue is typically found with a rich orange-gold coloration. There are those also seen with a greenish tint. It is relatively easy to find examples with natural color, such as this offering from AUCM.
The basement of the old U.S. Mint contains artifacts and photographs from the era 1838–1909, and is the part of the Louisiana State Museum devoted exclusively to the building's function in that capacity. Photo: Wikimedia Commons.
