1903 $1 Morgan Silver Dollar NGC MS67+ (CAC) - A Condition Rarity!
Out of the original mintage of 4,652,000, a good amount of 14,676 have been graded by NGC. From that amount, there are a mere 10 that carry the peak grade of MS67+, with just 3 finer. David Bowers tells us, "In terms of overall quality the 1903 is definitely the best Morgan dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint....most 1903 dollars exhibit excellent high point detail. The surfaces, though not frosty, are brilliant, smooth satin, and abrasions are few." Plus the coveted green CAC sticker gives this coin extra cachet. This is a registry coin of great beauty, with a light golden patina on both sides. You would be quite proud to own such a specimen. A coin such as this is not offered with any regularity, so it would be prudent to acquire it at this time. A discriminating collector who seeks only the finest examples of numismatic treasures will enjoy this coin for many years.

David Bowers reports that Mint State 1903 Morgan dollars were elusive until 1955, when a good many bags were paid out in the East. He recalls that such specimens were available at face value in northeastern Pennsylvania, where he lived then. Bowers quotes from a letter published in the February 1956 of The Numismatist, written by John J. Pittman, who writes, "I thought you might be interested in knowing that during the months of October and November large quantities of brilliant Uncirculated 1902 Philadelphia Mint silver dollars were released through various banks in Ohio, western Pennsylvania, and western New York. It is my understanding that bags containing all Uncirculated 1903 silver dollars were available." Bowers also tells us that in the 1960s there was a dealer in Salinas, California, who specialized in 1903 Morgan dollars, and at one time had gathered together a hoard totaling over 50 bags (50,000 coins). He reports that the famous Redfield Hoard (1976) had less than one bag of 1903 silver dollars, and that they graded MS-60 through MS-63.
