So-Called Dollar - 1902 Wells Fargo & Co. Semicentennial Medal HK-296 NGC MS63 Ex. Shevlin

This rare So-Called Dollar was issued by Wells Fargo in March of 1902. Struck by a private firm, an example of it was given to "each employee in the Company's service for more than one year."

Obverse presents two scenes. Upper is a horse-drawn stage coach carrying passengers. Two drivers are atop it, one with rifle drawn. Ribbon across middle reads WELLS FARGO & COMPANY. Below is a pony express rider on horseback, aiming his rifle at an Indian who is aiming a drawn arrow. The reverse offers a scene of a ship, factory, train (with Wells Fargo and Company upon the baggage car), quill pens and keys. Below a clenched fist is grasping rays that represent electric power. Across the center upon a ribbon is '1852 - MARCH 18th - 1902.' Below is 'EXPRESS AND BANKING' while below the fist at the rim is 'FIDELITY.'

Wells Fargo had an important role in extending our early frontiers, in settlement of those areas, and in helping and protecting early settlers. The express and banking firm launched by Henry F. Wells and William G. Fargo opened its doors at 114 Montgomery Street in San Francisco in 1852 to serve Gold Rush California. Wells Fargo was essential in "absolutely guaranteeing" the handling and delivery of gold. Since the U.S. Postal Service was limited to coastal towns, Wells Fargo deliveries to remote locations became a vital service. Their Concord Coaches, Drivers and Shotgun Messengers are part of history as well as the stuff of legends.
