1901/0-S $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle, Overdate FS-301 PCGS MS65
Writes Heritage Auctions, “Perhaps the only 20th century manually punched overdate. Later overdates, such as the 1909/8 double eagle, are the product of different dated hubs.”
FS-301, formerly FS-006. Breen-6780. This is a gorgeous Gem with flashy luster and vivid golden-apricot coloration. Upon this popular overdate in the Liberty Head gold series, the 1901/0-S half eagle presents traces of an underlying 0 at the upper-right corner of the final number 1 in the date. Only a small amount of the original mintage of 615,900 were produced with this popular overdate. Maybe only 1,500 examples remain across all grades and only 400 in Mint State, few of the latter as nice as the piece offered here. This example is among the finest graded. PCGS has graded 542 specimens as the 1901/0-S overdate. However, only 25 of those carry the FS-301 designation upon their holders. And of those 25, the piece offered by AUCM is one of only 4 graded MS65. Collectors Universe gives this variety a price of $3,500.00 in MS65.
