1900-O/CC $1 Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS MS66+ (CAC)
Here’s a popular variety for the Morgan dollar specialist, one offered in a high grade. PCGS has graded 29 of the 1900-O/CC as MS66+ with just 3 finer. Collectors Universe gives this variety a price of $11,000.00 in MS66+. In CAC, there are 48 in MS66/66+ with 2 finer.
Writes Ron Guth in PCGS Coinfacts, “The 1900-O over CC Silver Dollar is exactly that...it shows a New Orleans mintmark punched over a Carson City Mintmark. How could this be, when those two mints are so far apart? Actually, the Philadelphia Mint was responsible for making all of the dies used in all of the mints, including the branch mints. Thus, Philadelphia sent dies with O mintmarks to New Orleans and dies with CC mintmarks to Carson City. However, the Carson City Mint made no silver dollars after 1893, so there was no need for Philadelphia to send dies there in 1900.”

Guth reports that the same error was made on more than one die. He asks, “Were the 1900-O/CC Dollars made using old leftover dies from years earlier, or did an engraver make a mistake by punching a CC mintmark into some reverse dies in 1900?”
The 1900-O/CC Morgan Dollar is a common coin, with thousands certified in average Mint State, and even hundreds in Gem condition. However this offering from AUCM is a condition rarity in its assigned grade of MS66+.
