During the years 1947-1948 and carrying on into the early 1950s, several 1,000-coin bags of 1899-O dollars were released in the East from vaults deep inside the Treasury Building in Washington, D.C. Those coins were distributed among banks. Only a few dealers took advantage of this opportunity to stock up on a bag or two or a few rolls of the 1899-O dollars. Before this time, the 1899-O was actually a rarity in Mint State. But few collectors or dealers knew this.
Nonetheless, it was not until October 1962 that substantial numbers of bags of this issue became obtainable. David Bowers writes, “The occasion was the well-known release of long-hidden New Orleans Mint dollars from a sealed vault in the Philadelphia Mint. In the great Treasury release of 1962-1964, 1899-O coins were among the first silver dollars in quantity to see the light of day.”
