1899 $1 Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS MS64
Writes David Bowers, “The 1899, a semi-scarce date, has always been popular because of its low mintage figure … one of the lowest figures in the series.” The mintage for that year was a small 330,000.
The Annual Report of the Director of the Mint (1899) helps explain why: “The mint at Philadelphia, besides turning out the usual supply of minor coin, has borne the brunt of an exceptionally heavy demand for subsidiary silver, given some assistance to fill the required quota of silver dollars, and applied the rest of its capacity to the coinage of gold.”
PCGS has graded 5,100 examples as MS64 with 2,438 finer. Collectors Universe gives this issue a price of $550.00 in MS64.
