NGC Coin Explorer writes, "This particular issue clearly spent a lot of time in bags. Most 1898-S double eagles have numerous bag marks and abrasion. Due to this, the coin is very common in lower mint state grades through MS64. From MS64 to 65, however, the population drops by 90%."

Gold specialist David Akers tells us, "The 1898-S is a very common date. In fact, it is the second most common S-Mint Double Eagle after the 1904-S and it ranks as one of the eight or ten commonest issues in the entire Liberty Head series. It is readily obtainable in any condition up to choice uncirculated. Gems are rather scarce but they are still available with some regularity. Only the collector who requires a superb or 'perfect' coin will have trouble finding an 1898-S that suits him."
