David Bowers writes of this issue, “Most pieces are sharply struck and have nice lustre. All in all, a Mint State 1897-S coin is a delightful coin.”
The San Francisco Mint produced a sizable mintage of 5,825,000 pieces in 1897. Over the years it was available in bags. In fact, LaVere Redford reportedly had 20 1,000-piece bags of the 1897-S Morgan dollars. Despite this being a common coin and available from circulated grades up to superior mint state grades, in its assigned grade it is not a common coin and is near the top of the graded population. PCGS has graded 69 specimens as MS66+ with 41 finer. In CAC there are 97 in MS66/66+ with just 10 finer.
