      We are pleased to offer to the collector community a better date in the Morgan dollar series, the 1896-S in PCGS MS62. This coin is a must for the Morgan dollar enthusiast putting together a full set of mint state Morgan dollars. It would also serve as a good piece for a type set of mint state Morgan dollars. Even though it had a relatively high mintage, finding mint state examples can be a challenge.

      NGC Coin Explorer writes, "Although the 1896-S Morgan dollar had a mintage of 5 million coins, most went into circulation. Those that were kept in bags were apparently moved a lot, as they come with numerous abrasions and hits." David Bowers tells us, "Although the mintage of 5,000,000 would suggest plentitude in the numismatic market today, such is not the case. Years ago the 1896-S was a key issue in all grades, and today, despite some turned loose in the Treasury releases, the 1896-S is still high on the 'most wanted' list." He also writes, "The 1896-S is another of the Morgan dollar issues of which worn specimens are very common, but Mint State coins are rare. Bags of 1896-S Uncirculated dollars were paid out from the San Francisco Mint during the very early 1950s, when scant attention was paid to them as they had very little value at the time."
