1893-CC $10 Liberty Head Eagle PCGS AU50
Coins emanating from the Carson City mint hold a special place in the hearts and minds of collectors of historic U.S. coinage. This example would be the perfect addition to a collection of the specialist of Carson City issues. Or, if you would like one rare piece that carries the famous "CC" mintmark, please consider this offering. PCGS has graded 43 of the 1893-CC Eagle in AU50, with 114 finer.
The 14,000 eagles of 1893 were the last ever produced at the Carson City mint: "By direction of the secretary of the Treasury, coinage operations at the mint at Carson City was suspended on June 1, 1893." Why was there a need to close down this branch mint? The annual report of the Director of the Mint tells us, "The mint at Carson City being of limited capacity the expenses for coinage were much greater at Carson than at San Francisco." Thus ended an exciting and important chapter in numismatic history.
The storied Carson City Mint, which closed its doors the year this offering from AUCM was struck.
