1892-S 50C Barber Half Dollar PCGS MS64 (CAC)
Popular first year issue from San Francisco Mint!
This piece features a razor-sharp strike and original golden brown patina on both sides. First year issues are always popular with collectors, and here's a great opportunity to acquire an attractive choice specimen from the debut year of the Barber half series for your collection. PCGS has graded 36 as MS64 with 22 finer. In CAC, there are 4 in MS64 with only 8 finer.
Charles E. Barber, the Chief Engraver who designed and engraved the Barber series (dime, quarter, and half), may have drawn inspiration for his neo-classical Liberty (above) from this 5 franc French coin (below) that presents the head of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, fertility, grains, the harvest, motherhood, the earth, and cultivated crops.
Jim Halperin writes, "In the mid 1970s, half dollar collector extraordinaire James Bennett Pryor came across an original roll of 1892-S Barber half dollars. He kept the nicest one for his set and flew to Massachusetts to offer me the other 19. They were very frosty original Gems, coins that would grade, and no doubt have graded, MS64 to MS66 today. The 1892-S is a tough date in all grades, and rare in choice mint state condition. This mini-hoard greatly increased the survival rate of top grade specimens. The coins are highly recognizable and I occasionally see them today."
