Dramatic piece crafted and produced for the World Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. Out of 47 pieces of this issue graded by NGC, there are 6 in MS67BN with none finer.
The medal was designed by Adolph Weyl and engraved by Wilhelm Mayer, whose initials are found below Liberty's neck. It was produced in Stuttgart, Germany, for the firm Wilhelm Mayer Metallwaren Fabrik. The obverse was inspired by the ubiquitous standard silver dollar (Morgan dollar) of its day. Obverse: Liberty head facing left in high relief with stars around outer circle. Date of 1892 is below. Reverse: Columbus landing scene with multiple figures. Legend: "Dedicated To The American People in Honor of The 400th Anniversary Of The Discovery of America" around rim above. Below is "United We Stand Divided We Fall." Inside inner circle below is "1492." HK220. 35.8 mm.
