Despite its high mintage of 1,352,000, the 1892-CC dollar becomes pricy as the condition moves up from circulated into mint state. Wayne Miller tells us that the 1892-CC has booming luster with the frosty devices that Morgan dollar enthusiasts love. It is typically well struck, but flat struck examples are relatively common. The hits they took in the mint bags over the years are generally heavy, making it a challenge to find a gem.
The number of these coins in government vaults only numbered in the tens of thousands; that is because many went into circulation beginning in 1892. David Bowers writes that "many bags were paid out over a long period of years, including in 1926-1927, accelerating in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Most of these went into circulation." The year 1955 alone saw 50 bags sold. There were no 1892-CC dollars in the Treasury hoard. Thus, it will not be surprising to readers that there was only a single example of this date sold in the GSA mail bids of the 1970s. This is a rare coin, especially in mint state grades.
