1891-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle PCGS MS61

Here’s an attractive and affordable option in the Type 3 Liberty Head double eagle series. The original mintage of 1,288,125 provides many specimens of this issue to collectors today in the 21^st century. This piece was not among the famous Saddle Ridge Hoard of California, when a couple walking their dog in 2013 discovered 1,427 gold coins in rusted out old cans in the ground. They were worth around $10 million. However, there were 26 of the 1891-S Liberty Head double eagles found among the Saddle Ridge Hoard, with a dozen in mint state. PCGS has graded 1,218 as MS61 with 4,051 finer.
