1891-O $1 Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS MS64 (very PQ!)
1891-O $1 Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS MS64 (very PQ!)
We at AUCM are pleased to offer you a PQ (premium quality) example of the historically poorly struck 1891-O Morgan dollar in PCGS MS64. This coin is an anomaly--the opposite of what you typically expect in that issue. David Bowers tell us that, "The 1891-O dollar is famous as an example of poor to casual striking sharpness..." This piece would be perfect in a type set of mint state Morgan dollars. The ambitious, intrepid collector with the necessary resources may wish to put together a complete set of Morgan dollars, and include this PQ example among them.
Bowers continues, "The 1891-O had a bad reputation years ago for being less than lovely, but the advent of slabbing has helped...Some were made from tired dies and show granularity and flow lines. Some are also weakly struck at the date, an unusual area for such." However, as discussed above, this specimen is everything the typical 1891-O dollar is not. Silver dollar expert Wayne Miller writes, "The 1891-O exhibits enormous variation in strike. On the majority of pieces, there is no high point definition on obverse or reverse. On others, planchets were struck with excessive pressure to extend the useful life of worn dies...Central features on obverse and reverse are usually indistinct, although the strike may seem bold at first glance." Considering what both Bowers and Miller have written, the example offered by AUCM is a great rarity among the vast majority of 1891-O Morgan dollars.
