This is a fantastic candidate for a type coin for your collection. The 19 different $20 Liberty head double eagles produced at the Carson City Mint from 1870 to 1893 are one of the most popular sets in American numismatics. Recent years have seen prices of these coins soar due to growing collector interest.

With its mintage of 91,209, this is not a common coin to locate in mint state grades, for it was used in everyday commerce in the West. Plus, its Carson City origins makes this issue greatly desired  by enthusiasts of the Old West. NGC has graded 705 as AU58 with 241 finer. Collectors Universe gives this issue a price of $8,500.00 in AU58. In CAC, there are 109 in AU58 with 55 finer. CAC prices this issue at $9,380.00 in AU58.

The Double Eagles struck at the Carson City Mint served two basic functions: a circulating instrument of commerce and a storehouse of value. The big $20 gold coins were the easiest way to mint, transport and trade the great amount of gold that had recently been extracted from the earth of the West.
