1890-CC $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle PCGS MS64
It's quite possible this is the only surviving "old green holder" 1890-CC $5 gold half eagle in MS64 condition. We've done a pretty thorough evaluation of auction appearances and haven't found this coin anywhere. It comes from an old southern collection put together by a retired surgeon. Another interesting aspect of this 1890-CC is the PCGS population data. There are only 34 coins registered as MS64 out of a total of 626 graded (the 1891-CC has a total of 1,943). Yet there are only two graded finer!! One other observation: a more commonly encountered (term used loosely!) 1891-CC $5 MS64 sold in 1999 by Heritage in an old green holder (#4507140) very similar to this one for $17,250. In that lot description, it states "...There have been only two coins certified finer than MS64 by NGC and PCGS (6/99). Food for thought...!
