1890-CC $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle PCGS AU55 Ex. Rive d'Or Collection
Note: This coin has not been sent to CAC for review and possible endorsement by AUCM.
With its mintage of 91,209, the 1890-CC $20 is considered a common issue in the Carson City sub set of double eagles. However, when considering that PCGS and NGC have graded a combined total of only 4,792 pieces, it appears to be a scarcer date. The figure of 4,792 represents only 5.25 percent of the original mintage. PCGS has graded 370 as AU55 with 712 finer. Collectors Universe prices the 1890-CC $20 at $7,000.00 in AU55.
The Carson City Mint, where this great collectible was struck in 1890.
Heritage Auctions writes, "As with many other Liberty double eagle issues, an ample number of 1890-CC twenty dollar gold pieces were shipped in bags from the United States to overseas banks shortly after minting, eventually to find their way home many years later. And, as should be expected from large gold coins that were carelessly transported, most of the repatriated coins have surfaces marred with bagmarks." However, the example offered by AUCM does not have "surfaces marred with bagmarks" ! Take a close look at the photos of this attractive AU specimen. As opposed to those coins shipped in bags to overseas banks, this examples appears to have been lightly circulated and then put away for safe keeping by a collector.
