1888 $10 Liberty Head Eagle PCGS MS64 - Tied for Finest Known!
A great rarity and numismatic mystery
Here's an opportunity to acquire a great conditional rarity in the popular Liberty Head Eagle series. Out of its substantial mintage of 132,921, there are only two examples that carry the near-gem grade of MS64 from PCGS. And one of them is currently available to you from AUCM. NGC has graded none above the grade of MS63.
But here is the mystery. Out of that mintage, there have been 353 of the 1888 Eagle coins graded by PCGS and 488 graded by NGC. Where did the rest of them go? Research tells us that they were placed into circulation, but that does not explain their disappearance. Coins do not get circulated and then simply disappear. Circumstantial evidence tells us their either were hoarded or were at a later time melted for their bullion value. However, until some reliable account provides specific information, we will not know and the mystery of the missing 1888 Liberty Head gold eagle coins will persist.
