Bidder 6 - are you still out there?! :-)
David Akers writes, “The 1886 is one of the rarest dates of the entire Liberty Head Double Eagle series.”
PCGS has graded 7 as AU55 with 6 finer. Collectors Universe prices this rare issue at $165,000.00 in AU55.
Scott Rubin writes, “The 1886 Double Eagle is a very rare coin with an original mintage of only 1,000 and an estimated survival of approximately 40 to 60 specimens. This is the only Liberty Head Double Eagle that was struck in only one Mint; it is one of the lowest mintages of all Liberty Head Double Eagles.”
Rubin reports that since 2011, three 1886 Double eagles have sold above $100,000. The highest priced one sold for $129,250; it was graded by PCGS as Uncirculated details and tooled, while the other two both carried the grade of AU58. This price is higher than any Proof 1886 Liberty Head $20 has ever sold for at auction.
