1885 G$1 Indian Princess Gold Dollar PCGS PR64DCAM
Here’s an opportunity to acquire a beautiful golden treasure from the late 19th century. Few have been graded as Deep Cameo by PCGS. In fact, just 18 carry that superior attribution. PCGS has graded 4 as Proof 64 Deep Cameo, with 13 finer. Collectors Universe give this issue a price of $11,000.00 in its assigned grade of PR64DCAM.
Heritage Auctions provides some insight into the rarity of this issue. In 2022, they write, “The proof 1885 gold dollar is rarer than implied by its mintage of 1,105 pieces. PCGS has only certified about 100 examples in all grades, and that figure is likely inflated by resubmissions over the past 35 years. The low survivor rate is attributed to jewelers of the day, who planed off the reverses of gold dollars and engraved them as love tokens. Since the denomination no longer circulated, jewelers purchased proofs directly from the Mint.”
