1885-CC $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle PCGS AU50
Buy this coin and you will save $10,250.00 off the Collector’s Universe price!
Here is a truly rare double eagle with a scant mintage of 9,450 pieces. Thus, the 1885-CC twenty is a challenging issue for collectors to acquire. Coinage production at the Carson City Mint was suspended by Grover Cleveland’s administration in early 1885, and did not resume until 1889. PCGS has graded 35 as AU50 with 163 finer. Collectors Universe prices this issue at $30,000.00 in AU50.

This is a popular Carson City issue, one that is always in great demand. According to the authoritative research of Rusty Goe in his 2020 book, The Confident Carson City Coin Collector, it is the rarest of the CC-mint Double Eagle from the 1880s. Goe approximates that there are about 400 surviving pieces today.
The entire production of 9,450 coins entered circulation at the time of issue, for the Old West had a “hard money” economy and employed gold and silver coinage in everyday commerce. It is interesting to note that the 1885-CC specimen in the Smithsonian collection grades XF45. Therefore, if you purchase this piece, you will have a finer example than the one in the Smithsonian!
