1884-CC $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle NGC MS60
Only one variety is known for the 1884-CC Liberty head double eagle. On it are found intersecting die lines above the designer's ‘J.B.L’ initials. Most Carson City twenty dollar gold pieces are extremely difficult—if not impossible—to find in mint state condition.
The 1884-CC is one of the rare exceptions. From a mintage of 81,139 coins, the 1884-CC is relatively collectible in high grades. Circulated pieces still greatly outnumber their Uncirculated counterparts, however a fair number of examples are known in MS60 and MS61. The 1884-CC is a popular choice with mintmark type collectors who seek a Type Three double eagle for their collections.
This attractive Mint State piece displays sharply detailed design elements and lustrous orange-gold surfaces. It has the expected number of minor contact marks for its MS60 grade. This coin should find a good home in a fine collection or a branch mint gold type set. NGC has graded 87 as MS60, with 231 finer. Collectors Universe gives this issue a price of $12,000.00 in MS60.
