Here’s a coin that you would be delighted to own. There is a lot going for this 1884-CC Double Eagle: it was struck at the historic Carson City Mint; it’s more affordable in its XF45 grade; plus, it carries the desirable—and valuable—green CAC sticker!

PCGS has graded 319 as XF45 with 1,447 finer. Collector’s Universe prices this issue at $5,250.00 in XF45. In CAC, there are 43 in XF45 with 299 finer. CAC gives this issue a price of $5,500.00 in XF45.

The Double Eagles that were struck at the Carson City Mint served two important functions: they were a circulating instrument of trade and a storehouse of value. The big $20 gold coins were the easiest way to mint, transport and trade the great amount of gold that had been extracted from the mines of the Old West.
