David Bowers writes, "Following the run of numismatically-available San Francisco coins from 1878 through 1882, now with the 1883-S we encounter a key issue. In contrast with the earlier dates, the 1883-S is very difficult to find....The 1883-S usually is seen with above average to quite sharp strike, quite attractive. The lustre ranges from medium frosty to deep and is generally pleasing to the eye."
