1883-S $1 Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS AU58
Here’s a scarce piece to include in your collection. With a mintage of 6,250,000 coins, it should be easy to acquire an 1883-S Morgan dollar. Nonetheless, unlike other issues from the early 1880s, this S-Mint coin is considered scarce. That suggests a combination of two possibilities: it saw circulation during the 1880s and/or significant amounts of the issue were melted during 1918 under the Pittman Act.
In the higher Mint State grades, this coin becomes rare. The 1883-S was not distributed in large numbers during the Treasury Department releases of the 1960s. The result was that while many other issues once considered to be rare became more available, the 1883-S remained scarce. PCGS has graded 978 as AU58 with 3,313 finer. Collectors Universe prices this issue at $900.00 in AU58.
