This is a truly stunning example, however, it is one that will not break the bank. Ron Guth writes, "Prooflike and Deep Mirror Prooflikes are scarce and represent about one-seventh of the total population. Both appear to be of similar rarity. Gems are readily available in these formats, too, but they are usually more expensive because of their distinctive appearance." Out of its mintage of 1,204,000, there have been 4,264 of the 1883-CC DMPL coins graded. Of those, there are 849 in MS65DMPL, with 252 finer.

Ron Guth writes, "The 1883-CC $1 is one of the most common dates issued by the Carson City Mint. Large quantities of full bags of $1,000 face value appeared in the 1960s in U.S. Treasury vaults, accounting for most of the known population. These were distributed in the late 1970s and early 1980s by the General Services Administration, which sold individual coins to dealers and collectors.... In general, coins of this date show strong strikes and deep, frosty luster."

There is much western lore associated with Carson City Morgan dollars. Did Wyatt Earp have silver dollars in his pocket when he stopped by the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona Territory, in 1881? It is quite possible. Did "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Billy "the Kid," Chief Sitting Bull, or Annie Oakley pay for drinks, provisions, or clothing in the Rockies during the late 1800s? If so, the distinctive clang of a silver dollar was heard as it was dropped onto a wooden bar or store counter. The smell of whiskey hung in the air as stacks of Morgan dollars sat upon the gaming tables in smoke-filled rooms of Rhyolite, Tincup, Silver Reef and other gambling towns that dotted the Wild West. In banks, bordellos, and bistros in Helena, Cheyenne, and Denver, clerks handled silver dollars every day.  Many dollars that changed hands in those days carried the "CC" mintmark of Carson City.
