1880-S $1 Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS MS66
What collectors simply love about Morgan dollars from the San Francisco Mint, especially the 1880-S, is their consistently excellent quality. They have a "WOW" factor that is indisputable. When you walk a coin show and a coin grabs your attention, pulling you to that table, 9 times out of 10 it will be an S-mint Morgan dollar! PCGS has graded 12,080 as MS66 with 4,280 finer. Collectors Universe prices this issue at $400.00 in MS66.
Many of the 1880-s Morgan dollars were produced and summarily stored in 1000-piece canvas mint bags, never to see the light of day until many years later. David Bowers tells us, "The 1880-S is a delightful Morgan dollar, combining usually-excellent strike and lustre.... The majority of Mint State pieces in existence today were released during the dispersal of the Treasury hoard [of] 1962-1964."
