1880-CC $1 Morgan Silver Dollar NGC MS63 Ex. GSA Hoard, Box & COA included
The 1880-CC $1 Morgan dollar had a mintage of 495,000. Dave Bowers writes that they generally have frosty surfaces and "[t]he lustre on a typical 1880-CC is quite nice." The GSA hoard total of this date was 131,529--22.25% of the total mintage. This date is easier to find and therefore more affordable. NGC has graded 5,586 in MS63, with 9,648 finer.
Coins in the distinctive GSA black holders are more desirable to collectors and dealers alike. Plus this example come with its original box and COA. The 1880-CC was produced in two varieties: Reverse of 1878 (flat eagle breast and parallel top arrow feathers on the reverse) of about 125,000, and Reverse of 1879 (slanted top arrow feather on reverse) of about 360,000. This example is the Reverse of 1879.
Close-up photos of both reverses for the 1880-CC Morgan dollar. The example offered by AUCM features the reverse of 1879 (pictured right). Photo courtesy of PCGS Coin Facts website.
