1880-CC $1 Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS MS64 (CAC)
Carson City Morgan dollars are always in great demand. They have a combination of wonderful factors in their favor: the romance and history of the Old West and the Comstock Lode, the short-lived history of the Carson City Mint, and the consistent excellent quality of the coins themselves. PCGS has graded 5,374 as MS64, with 4,358 finer. In CAC, there are 334 in MS64 with 501 finer. The total original mintage of this issue was 591,000.
The 1880-CC was produced in two varieties: Reverse of 1878 (flat eagle breast and parallel top arrow feathers on the reverse) of about 125,000, and Reverse of 1879 (slanted top arrow feather on reverse) of about 360,000. The piece being offered by AUCM is the Reverse of 1879. David Bowers writes that 1880-CC Morgan dollars generally have frosty surfaces and "[t]he lustre on a typical 1880-CC is quite nice." The GSA hoard total of this date was 131,529--22.25% of the total mintage. This date is easier to find and therefore more affordable.
