The year 1880 saw 1,355 quarter proofs struck, which represents the highest proof mintage of this series. This was not related to the low mintage of business strike coins. It was fueled by speculative interest and investment in the proof-only Trade dollar of that year. The majority of numismatists of that time obtained only the minor proof set, which consisted of the cent, three-cent piece and five-cent piece. However, collectors desiring silver coins typically purchased the complete silver proof set, which also contained those minor coins.
