The 1879 has a relatively low mintage of 88,960, with hundreds of pieces certified in grades between AU55 and MS65. Top quality Gems, however, are challenging condition rarities. NGC has graded only 5 as MS66 with none finer. Collector’s Universe gives this issue a price of $7,000.00 in MS66.
Writes Heritage Auctions of this specific coin in their listing of July of 2022: “The present high-grade representative certain merits its lofty third-party assessment, since the lustrous canary-gold surfaces show only infrequent and trivial signs of contact. The strike is good, and the eye appeal is outstanding.”
