1879-O $1 Morgan Silver Dollar PCGS MS65
We at AUCM are pleased to offer for consideration an 1879-O $1 Morgan dollar graded PCGS MS65. Rare in MS65, this is a flashy coin that the Morgan dollar enthusiast should strongly consider! This piece would be the perfect addition to a full set of Morgan dollars, or it could be a great "stand-alone" silver dollar from the New Orleans mint. It also could be counted in a set of uncirculated pieces of varying denominations from the New Orleans mint. If you would like professional assistance in creating any of these sets, please reach out to AUCM.
Originally opened in 1838, the New Orleans mint was taken over by the Confederacy in 1861 during the Civil War. After the war, it remained dormant for several years. It was the Bland-Allison Act of 1878 that saved the New Orleans mint from oblivion, making it relevant once again. That was because Bland-Allison compelled the Treasury to purchase millions of dollars of silver each month and turn them into the new standard dollars, which today we know as Morgan dollars. The coin offered in this listing has historical significance: 1879 was the year the New Orleans reopened its doors for business and was therefore the first year it produced Morgan dollars. Twelve Branch Mint Proof dollars were struck at the New Orleans Mint on February 20, 1879, to commemorate the resumption of operations that year.
