- This is a magnificent specimen of the first-year Morgan dollar design from the San Francisco mint. The original mintage was 9,774,000.
- This star coin has bold and beaming mirrored fields that contrast wonderfully against the sharply detailed and highly frosted reliefs. We do note a few light ticks for the sake of full disclosure, but the overall eye appeal is strong.
- The obverse on its own perhaps merits a Deep Mirror Prooflike designation.
- The NGC Census in MS66 is only ONE (1) coin for both the (+) plus AND the (*) Star Designation, with 1 finer (MS68). THE SECOND FINEST GRADED.
- PCGS Population is 17 coins with 2 finer (both are MS68 prooflike).
- In 1986, we attended Superior’s auction sale of the Wayne Miller/Hoagy Carmichael sale that January. The 1878-S Morgan Dollar in that sale was one of the finest this cataloguer has ever seen, and most likely accounts for at least one of the MS68 certified coins today (it sold before the advent of certification). Thirty-two (32) years ago, that coin brought $37,400 – a record price at the time!
